2020 Festive 500

The Festive500 was formally launched in 2010 by former Rapha designer Graeme Raeburn and has been an annual event since. Graeme actually got the idea after riding 1,000 km in 2009 as a one man against the elements kind of thing, and wanted to make it more of a social thing, challenging folk to also get out on their bikes but over a more achievable distance.

I've always thought it to be the most antisocial thing to do at Christmas, a time when most of us are with friends and family, and, in my case, with people who don't cycle! However, with this year being one where socialising has not been an easy option, I thought, for the first time ever, of giving it a go.

My attempt, however, was probably more akin to Graeme's first year, in that it's been a very solo challenge and the elements have been contending with 20 hours of mindless riding on a turbo! Yes, some may say, like my former hero, Peter Sagen, that's not real cycling but I have 3 reasons why this year more than any, I disagree .. and who's Peter Sagen?
  1. We all have a duty, where we can, to protect oneself and others from Covid. The best protection is isolation. I lost my only cousin to this pandemic earlier this year and so it's understandably one thing at the forefront of my mind.
  2. Because of (1) I've had my worst year of cycling since I returning to the 'sport' 7 years ago. I cycled at least 50% less this year than in past years. My bike(s) are now of dubious road worthiness and as for fitness, well 50km in a week would be a challenge let alone 500km! My Turbo gives me the freedom to replicate the act of cycling in isolation and free from the risk of being stranded miles from home, alone, either with broken bike or body.
  3. I've been working 9-5 from Christmas Eve to New Year and so even without (1) and (2), getting time to do any serious road cycling would have been impossible. Luckily, for the first time in its 10 year history, Rapha permitted certified km completed on a turbo to count towards the Festive500.
My Festive500 Office

So, on Christmas Eve, I set up my office in the garage where, although dry, temps ranged from between 1-6 degrees. On my Specialized Roubaix bike, attached to a Wahoo turbo, I pedalled for 20 hours, held video calls and during the quieter times, completed education sessions, and rode my way through the 500 km. To make it a bit more interesting, I also looked up a few of the longer Zwift courses, I had yet to complete and could cross off, i.e. those which would take more than an hour to ride and which, I would normally never think to entertain!

There's no way I would normally want to do 2h 30m on a turbo!

I managed the first 250km by Sunday and ramped up the effort when back at work, to conclude the final 250km a day earlier than planned, and allow me some contingency. The final day, yesterday, was a painful one. It started with Zwift crashing early in the morning and losing some of the ride. I switched to another provider while I held one of my daily conference calls and then after a coffee break, I returned to Zwift, now working again. When I used to go to the gym, many years ago, I found their turbos seriously hurt my knees, something cycling on the road has hardly ever done. By this, the 7th day on the turbo, my left knee was hurting so much, that I could manage only a handful of km before having to take a rest, and any undulation in the virtual road was unpleasant, to say the least! Anyway, before lunch yesterday, on seeing the counter finally click over to 501 km, I climbed off and, with relief, ticked that box.

An unusual thing to do in an unusual time .. the perfect way to end an unusual year!

I wish you all a very safe, healthy and Happy New Year ... carry on cycling - however, you do it!

Rule of 3+3 Coffee Club Ride

Some snaps from this morning’s rule of 6 (or as it was 3+3) Coffee Club Ride ... and me trying to get to grips with a new phone! I think it was actually the first outing of long fingered gloves that was the issue!

Club Champagne Charlott

Drafting 14mark14 has never been so much fun. White van men also seem to be so much less aggressive ๐Ÿคท‍♂️

New club jersey design? ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿšด‍♀️๐Ÿšด‍♂️๐Ÿคฆ‍♂️

Out with the Coffee Club.

Started with a good kick of @geraintthomas86 coffee  at The Filling Station & @colyford_cycles and ended with an intriguing Devon Delight rice paper flavoured ice cream  at the new Diamond’s Tea Room.

Must have also been the hottest day of the year to be out on the bike!

Two swallows don’t make a summer

Two swallows don’t make a summer and two Coffee Club rides don’t make a cyclist, but my second ride with the Coffee Clubbers since surfacing from lockdown is certainly a move in the right direction!

Today we had a social distancing peloton of 3-3-1. Not quite a full lineup as a number of the team have gone AWOL and we have no subs bench! It was still a good turnout and with a number of club jerseys on display, 4 in the new race yellow & black and 1 in the heritage yellow & red, it was reminiscent of the old Thursday evening club rides; which we’ve still yet to be given the green light to recommence.

So another 40 miles under my belt but being 300 miles behind where I would normally be this time of year, I hope summer gets extended to December to enable me to catch up!

Lockdown Zwift Cycling - Outside!

Lockdown Zwift Racing Video

Just uploaded my latest lockdown Zwift Racing video from last night’s virtual cycling race .. it’s a slightly different format from my last, and a bit more of a home made cine film than normal ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m thinking lockdown is finally taking its toll on me!

On the bike I'm in my yellow & black AVP race kit, while my avatar on the screen is wearing the Rapha grey pink & white race kit  ๐Ÿ˜‰

SW Zwift Racing Championship

Thursday's Round 6 Hare & Hounds race, was brutal.

This was a Zwift group handicap race covering 4 laps of Central Park, NY, in which riders set off at timed intervals, the quickest going last; the aim being for a group to catch the one in front and/or stay away from the group behind them in hot pursuit. The key to success was supposedly to work together, as no lone rider should be capable by themselves of catching the group ahead. That is at least what the race book says.

There were however groups all over the road, it was carnage, but the end the result between the 3 AVP entrants was no surprise. Although starting some 5 minutes behind us, Richard G cruised past Keith H and I at the halfway point! I got off to an outstanding start, leading group C from the outset, but I was soon reeled in and it was then just a race to keep ahead of Keith. In the event before last, I suffered the indignation of seeing Keith gaining a second a mile on me and there was nothing I could do to stop him passing me 5 miles from the finish. This time, knowing he was carrying an injury, I was not going to let him pass. I even accelerated away from drafting in a group who were going just that bit slower than Keith. Sorry Keith, I know as the race book said, we probably should have worked together, but our race was done by then ๐Ÿ™„

We're now sitting in 24/45 position and as far as I can make out, ahead of even 1st Chard Wheelers, who I believe are in 37th position! I'm pleased to be able to claim only to being a first class domestique for the club in these races, as it is Richard who is channelling Froome in gaining the majority of our points .. so if any one else would like to join us, please do.. we earn a point for every finisher and it's amazing good fun! The next race is on the 21st, so plenty of time to get set up.

I cut this short 3.5 minute video of this race if you'd like to see what it's all about. https://youtu.be/AQ_leWUPCyo

There's loads going and it's quite confusing being there let alone as an observer looking in. So if you have questions please shout. I probably won't make another recording (phew! I hear you say), as I'm sure the distraction and weight of the camera equipment lost me the valuable minutes, I allowed Richard to make up on me!

Coffee Club Social Distancing Zwift Ride

The Coffee Club did a social distancing group Zwift ride this morning following the Muir and the Mountain Route on Watopia .. a 22 mile ride through forests and across the snow-line, climbing 2,700 ft up a mountain!

5 started out, Nick (our ride leader), Richard, Mark, Keith and yours truly. Keith neglected to load the route before heading out and so  he powered off into the sunrise never to be seen again. Richard G joined up with us briefly on the climb; I felt I was giving him a run for his money before team orders pulled me back to the peloton.

It was probably one of the most crazy 90 minutes I've ever spent on a bike, with Nick's commentary and instructions delivered via random dictated text while Richard Q's bouffant avatar had us in tears! While we need to work on keeping together the formula worked a treat and I can't wait to see where next week's ride will take us!

Eight Years of Chamois Cream

Friends have inspired and encouraged me in my cycling pursuits over the years, none more than one of my oldest friends, Michael G who first introduced me to the power of chamois cream; essential in keeping me chafe free in those long rides! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Mountain Biking in the Forest

Went mountain biking yesterday for the first time in my life .. was kind of fun, though will probably work on my off roading skills a little more before trying the red run again; was a bit of white knuckle ride at times! Oh yes, and I need to sort out my MTB wardrobe too, as the local kids did not seem quite ready for what's currently hot on the Paris and Milan trails!

Anyway, I dusted off the video cameras to record the momentous event; also for my club, which has not spoken of MTBing since the 'night of the long forks'. The results of filming can be viewed below. I'm only disappointed that the images do not look as scary as I remember, mainly because those shots were of either closeups of rocks, bushes or just of the blue sky above and so not perhaps as interesting as the calmer pictures of cyclists processing through the forest!

I've used another of Rob Longstaff's great tunes, 'Like Candy', for this video's soundtrack. I am working my way through the tracks on his latest album 'Groovefish' (https://soundcloud.com/robert_longstaff/sets/groovefish), in my view, his best .. so will be looking for more filming options to add further tracks to as the year unfolds.
